Lower Park is dedicated to hand-sourcing textiles from different countries around the world. We promote travel and internationality through limited edition products with worldwide backgrounds. Our hats are responsibly made by hard working, well payed artisans.
Lower Park was created from traveling & living abroad. Founder Andre Wiken moved to Guadalajara, México in 2012 to learn spanish and ended up spending over three years and starting two hostels that hosted 100's international backpackers and students from around the world. Andre had already been a travel enthusiast with a infatuation for textiles when he started Lower Park. One afternoon in Guadalajara he spent looking for a hat maker and connected with Hector who had been making hats for over 20 years.
Our first year 2014 we made our a batch of 300 hats with textiles from Syria, México and the United States. The Syrian textiles came from a Syrian Refugee store owner we met while living in Berlin. The US designs came from San Francisco, mostly vintage upholstery fabrics. The Méxican textiles came from a sourcing trip to Chiapas, México.
On our second trip in mid 2015 we brought our 1.5 year old daughter to Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Spain & Morocco for three months. Selling hats in the streets of Istanbul & Barcelona helped fund the second production. We returned with five large, fifty pound suitcases full of textiles and this helped us produce enough stock to start vending at festivals, craft fairs and street pop up shops.
Check out our production video where we make our product. If you've ever been in the manufacturing business, you'll know how difficult it is to get low minimums and consistent top quality. Our hats are artisanally made in the center of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Hector is the man who is in charge of the factory and has helped maintain the quality of our caps. He's been in the hat business since he was a late teen and has helped work with our sometimes complicated & delicate textiles.
Thanks for your support in helping us live an life full of travel, design & culture. We hope to continue traveling and one day have textiles from all corners of the world. Don't work too much, buy a plane ticket somewhere and get lost. You never know who you'll meet and what you'll get into. Check out our soundcloud to hear worldwide mixes and field recordings.
